Article 3 – The rise of AI in corporate Learning and Development

AI has completely revamped the way organizations approach all business functions, including Learning & Development.

AI based learning is the new kid on the block. It’s revolutionizing corporate training, by improving employee engagement, and driving business performance. Let’s dive in and understand how.

1. Curated learning through AI-Driven Learning Paths

AI’s ability to personalize learning experiences is a game changer. Traditional training programs are generic and may not cater to individual employee needs. AI-driven Learning Management Systems can analyze employee performance, skills, and learning preferences to recommend customized learning paths (Johnson, 2023).

For example, in the organization I work in, the LMS’s come equipped with AI- powered machine learning algorithms and chatbots that can suggest learning content based on an employee’s job role, past training, and KPIs. Research by Deloitte (2023) found that organizations using AI-based personalization in training saw a 32% increase in employee engagement.

2.  Introduction of Adaptive Learning

Adaptive learning is when training content is specifically adjusted based on a learner’s progress and knowledge gaps. This allows employees to access content at their required knowledge level, which prevents frustration from overly complex material or boredom from redundant lessons (Clark & Mayer, 2022).

3. Automated Content Creation

Previously, I discussed on the growing trend of Micro-learning in L&D. AI can support microlearning by streamlining content creation by generating training materials, quizzes, and even video summaries. This allows AI to scan vast amounts of data and create bite-sized, engaging learning content (Singh, 2020).

4. Gamification

AI Powered Gamification improves engagement by introducing an element of competition in the form of leaderboards and learning incentives like badges and certificates into training programs, especially e-learning such as E-Modules.

For example, Duolingo’s AI-driven gamification strategies have been widely successful in increasing user engagement in language learning.

Challenges to overcome

One main challenge in incorporating AI into learning is the Bias in AI Algorithms – AI models can reflect biases in training data, leading to inaccurate recommendations (Hughes, 2021).

Furthermore, due to the new Data Protection regulations in Europe that impact all countries engaged in business with EU countries including Sri Lanka, there is a concern in how AI-powered training systems collects vast amounts of employee data, raising privacy and security issues (KPMG, 2023).

And finally, with the popularization of AI based learning and rush to incorporate AI into every single business function to keep up with the competition, corporates today are moving away from the understanding that human facilitators are still required for complex skill development and emotional intelligence training (Forbes, 2023). This can lead to the loss of the human touch factor when it comes to learning.

In conclusion, AI is heralding a new era of corporate training by making learning more personalized and efficient. While challenges such as data privacy and bias will arise, the benefits of AI-powered learning far outweigh the risks it imposes. As AI continues to evolve, organizations will have to invest in AI in L&D to survive in a rapidly evolving digitalized world.

    1. I think, when taking Sri Lanka as an example, our digital literacy rates are the biggest challenge when it comes to overcoming tech barriers. It's the same with AI. It's a relatively new technology, that most employees without a strong tech background, don't understand to use to its maximum efficiency. Right now, most people use AI to draft their emails when it can be used for so much more. It's the same with learning. Once people have an understanding of it's potential, the possibilities on how to use it to learn is endless

  2. This is a very informative article on how AI technology could lead the way forward in L & D. In todays world, AI has become a hot topic for discussions on how it could shape up the future of the world. Despite its challenges and limitations, organization are now moving or rather have started to invest in incorporating AI technology to enhance business operation. Nevertheless, using AI technology to reshape how employees acquire new knowledge and skills is now being considered by organization in order to reap the full potential of the technology.

Saying that , AI has now come into a level where is has started to reshape the global labour market. A report by McKinsey Global Institute has stated that AI could lead to half of the work performed by employee automated by the year 2055. This could lead to potential risk on the society as organization would start reducing their employee count, especially employees with intermediate skills and would hunt for rather high skilled employee for, C. (2021). Understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on skills development. UNESCO Publishing.

In this context, what options do you think orgnizations could consider in order to minimize the social impact whilst implementing AI technology on L & D?

    1. In my opinion, to minimize the social impact of AI in L&D, organizations could focus on upskilling and reskilling employees, helping them learn new skills for more advanced roles. They can also use AI to assist employees, not replace them, by automating repetitive tasks while humans focus on creative and strategic work. Promoting a growth mindset will also help employees see AI as an opportunity to improve, not a threat.
